Sick as a dog

Literally.

I should have known something was up when Rascal seemed like he was trying to sit on the edge of his seat in his car.  A few minutes later I figured out that he had gotten sick in his seat and didn’t want it to get on him.  Great.

This has happened before, although it’s been over a year since it happened in the car.  I was well prepared with baby wipes.  I also had a plastic bag which came in handy as well.

On my way home from work, I stopped to pick Rascal up at my aunt’s and she gave me a ton of peaches in all sizes, from small to ginormous.  Some of these are definitely going to end up in the freezer.

I had plans to go running with a group of girls, but bailed because I was afraid Rascal would get sick on the couch while I was gone.  Being at home didn’t really help matters because as soon as I turned my back he jumped up on the couch and got sick.  Twice.

Ready for dinner now?

1/2 can TJ’s tomato bisque

a slice of Dakota bread with two kinds of cheese, New Zealand Cheddar and Cotswald with chives, sliced thinly with a veggie peeler

brussel sprouts, thawed from being frozen in the microwave, then sauteed with sriracha and a pinch of brown sugar and salt

This is my favorite way to have brussels and I know I got the idea from somewhere but have no idea where.  If I got it from you, please take full credit.

Since I didn’t get my run in, I wanted to do some kind of exercise.  I’ve heard that plyometrics is good for runners and can help you improve overall.  I did P90X for 60 days last winter, but stopped because I got bored with it.  Because I did the lean version, I never tried the plyometrics, because it wasn’t on my schedule for the first 60 days.

Tonight was the night to try it.

This is how I usually workout to DVDs.  I watch the exercise DVD on my laptop and watch TV in the background through the three large mirrors on the wall.  Wow, Toni looks crazy.

This is what I mean by a sweaty mess.

I really liked the plyometrics.  It was a lot of jumping around and I really like circuit training because I don’t get bored easily.  I will definitely do this video again.  Let’s see if it improves my speed.

After my workout, i drug this little guy out of bed who was not happy about it at all.  I suspected he needed a shower.  I always bathe Rascal in the shower with me.  He’s always been such a needy dog and always behaved better if I was in the shower with him.

I don’t usually  have a snack before bed, but I got hungry and had the last of the Flax Plus with half a banana and almond milk.

I also made some of these Chocolate Coconut Date Truffle, but made them smaller than usual.  My recipe usually makes 4 and they come in at 200 cals a piece.  This time I shaped them into 11 smaller truffles and then ate one because I wanted to I don’t like odd numbers.  🙂

Confession of a bad blogger: I also had about 6 little clumps of my homemade granola today and 4 tortilla chips.  It’s hard to photograph everything, but I thought I would come clean.

Rascal is still getting sick every few hours so he has been banished to his bed.  He’s not allowed to sleep with me tonight, but he’s perfectly comfortable in his little bed as you can see above.  I hope he’s better in the morning.

Good night.

Walking tour

For some reason, when I woke up this morning, I got it in my head that I was going to go running.  I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get my 10 mile run in yesterday and was even contemplating going for it this morning.  This was despite the fact that I ran 7 miles yesterday.

Just in case I haven’t mentioned this before, I would like to do two 10 mile runs before I leave for my honeymoon, because I’m not sure how much exercise I’ll get there and I’m trying to build my mileage up.  I did 9 miles last weekend, and it was exactly two weeks until my wedding as of yesterday.  This leaves me two weeks to do two 10 milers, and I’m doubting if I’m going to get it done.  We’ll see…

I started off with a little fuel.

Great Harvest Dakota bread with a thing smear of AB and a little more generous smear of raspberry jam.

I headed outside for my run, but immediately could tell that my legs were super tired.  Not sore, just tired.  I knew that I was overdoing it, so I headed back inside.

I made a little more breakfast: 1/2 pear and a few raspberries nuked for one minute, then stirred together with Greek Gods yogurt.  Coffee came later as well.

I started to get a little antsy because I really wanted to be outside, but knew a run was not in store for me today.

I woke up Brad and asked him if he would go on a walk with me.  Being the good sport that he is, he agreed.  We set off on our walk with Rascal.  We soon ended up in the South End neighborhood and realized that Rascal needed some water.

We waited patiently while Brad went into a gas station for water.

While waiting, I saw a really gross advertisement.  Forget those brochures with the mistreated cows, advocating for vegetarianism.  They should put this beef hotdog in brochures.  Yuck!  What is up with the texture?  I’m not a vegetarian, but maybe I would be if I had to eat one of those.

Brad made a quick water dish out of a styrofoam cup.

We had some water too.

We also poured some on Rascal, which he immediately shook off.

We soon left South End and made our way to the Dilworth Neighborhood.

Adjacent to Dilworth Elementary is a really cool community park.

I wish I could have taken a picture of the playground and the water fountain play area, but people don’t usually like strangers to take pictures of their children.

Rascal soon got tired again, and we settled down on a bench.

The Crepe Myrtles are so beautiful right now.  They remind me of my grandmother because when she was alive, she had a huge one in her front yard.  She would send me out with a gigantic pair of scissors and let me cut a gigantic bouquet worth of flowers off the tree.

We returned to Uptown and wandered into The Green looking for more water for Rascal.

Book statue

The Green has mock road signs of real places that make the name of famous authors.

I love these small touches.

Copper pages of a book.  This one has a poem called “Cultures” etched on the page.

Fish fountain sans water.  Usually the water squirts sporadically out of the fish’s mouths.

Overall, we covered about 6 miles.  Because he’s so close to the ground, the heat from the sidewalk affects Rascal  much more than it does people.  Our walk was really nice but beastly hot.

Is it too soon to say I’m ready for the fall?

Back to basics

This morning I went back to my “basic” oatmeal recipe – Banana oats with PB & J.  I think banana oat with PB are everyone’s standard in the blog world, but you know mine has to have some jam.

Oats contained:

1/2 cup oats cooked in 1/2 cup almond milk and 1/2 cup water

1/2 thinly sliced banana stirred in when oats were almost completely cooked

topped with 1 Tbsp. organic crunch PB and 1 Tbsp. Crofters Superfruit Asia

Perfect and satisfying!

Very much unlike his usual self, Rascal decided to get up with me today instead of Brad.  When my alarm went off, he poked his head out from under the covers at the bottom of the bed and creeped over to the very edge of the bed, placing his paws over the edge.  This is how he shows me he’s ready to get down.

While eating my breakfast, he went and got in his own bed, which Brad and I taught him to do while we eat.  This prevents begging or at least he’s at a distance while he’s staring us down and not in our face giving us his pitiful look.  If you have a dog, you know the look.  It’s the “you don’t ever feed me” look.  They somehow pull of this look even if they have just been fed.

Since Rascal was such a good boy, I decided to reward him, as we often do.  I let him lick my bowl.

Brad and I only let him do this when there is only a residue of the food we ate, not when there is any real amount of food left.  He enjoys this so much and it’s positive reinforcement that he was good for not begging while I ate.

Look!  All clean!

He always likes to show that he is finished and will look to you for more if there is another dish on the table.

Disclaimer: This bowl went immediately  into the dishwasher where it will be properly sanitized. 🙂

I hope everyone has a great day!

Sunday is my fun day

Anyone know where those slightly altered lyrics are from?

It was so nice to catch up on some sleep.  I turned in around 11 pm on Saturday night and woke up at 6:45 am.  Yes folks, that’s catching up to me.

I immediately broke into my Food for Life sprouted English muffins.  I bought them yesterday at Earth Fare and really wanted to try them.  I slathered a Laughing Cow on both sides, the topped one with an egg over easy and 1 oz. of avocado.  The other I topped with a little blue berry jam.  A few cherries on the side made this breakfast so filling and delicious.

Brad and I chilled out the coach for most of the morning working on some blog-related stuff.  The other week, Brad changed my header but now he is working on a complete face-lift that I am so excited about. 🙂

This little guy was upset with me because I wasn’t giving him any attention.  Rascal likes to mash himself against me when I’m on the couch, which I love except when I’m trying to type on the computer.  He always pushes against my elbow making it impossible to type for very long.

I also worked on a second batch of homemade granola.  I made granola two weeks ago, but didn’t share the recipe because I thought it was just okay.  This version is much better.  I used…

– 3 cups of rolled oats

– 3/4 cup applesauce

– 1/3 cup dried cranberries

– 1/4 cup agave

– 1 tsp. cinnamon

Update: 1/4 cup flax seed meal (sorry, I forgot)

Mix up all ingredients, spread evenly onto a baking sheet, and cook for 25 minutes on 350 degrees, stirring once half way through.  Pretty easy right?  And not very many ingredients.

This will definitely be showing up tomorrow on some yogurt.

One thing I like about this version versus the last version I didn’t share is that it has a lot more granola clusters.  The last version only had a bit of oil, but I didn’t want to use too much, which caused it to burn quickly.  Using applesauce instead of oil means you can as much as you want and it helps hold the clusters together, if you like that kind of texture.

After my short baking session, Brad and I unwrapped all of our wedding shower gifts, which are now in the dishwasher being washed.  We also repacked all the boxes with things we need to get rid of like Brad’s college dishes and all the wine glasses and beer tasting glasses we have picked up over the past three years.

My guys are such a big help!

Around 11 am we headed off to try out a church that is only about two blocks away, returning afterwards for lunch.  We had plans to go to the mall and I had hopes of going to Earth Fare for their salad bar.  But Brad suggested we make lunch at home, which was really the better option since we had so many veggies to use up.

So, I improvised and made a salad worth of the Earth Fare salad bar.  On my salad was…

It was soooo good, even if it was missing stuffed grape leaves, which is my favorite part of any salad bar.  Brad made a salad with chicken + all of my ingredients, sans pickles, hearts of palms, and couscous.

I had plans to workout at some point during the morning, but decided to take the day off to let my muscles rest after yesterday’s 9 miler.

Hope your Sunday was a fun day!

Rascal is a minimalist and a gentleman

Rascal would like to show you his Halloween costume.

I'm cute

He’s quite the exhibitionist.  The bow tie is actually part of the devil accessories package I bought to make my devilled egg costume.  He loves his collars so we thought we would try the bow tie.  It’s been about 12 hours and he’s still wearing it.  🙂
